WEST WARWICK - More than three dozen members of an •
AIDS-awareness group staged a vocal - and sometimes confrontational
- protest outside the Civic Center yesterday, urging visitors to
a Bill of Rights exhibit to boycott products manufactured by the Phil ..
ip Morris Co., sponsor of the exhibit.
Members of ACT•UP, or the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power,
also called for the defeat of U.S. Sen. Jesse Helms, a North Carolina
Republican who receives financial support from Philip Morris.
Helms is a strident opponent of gay rights and AIDS education.
He is also a strong supporter of tobacco subsidies; Philip Morris
makes Marlboro cigarettes.
Shouting ''Philip Morris equals Helms and Helms equals death,"
and "Racist, sexist, antigay, Jesse Helms, go away," the group paraded
in a circle as visitors to the exhibit made their way to the entrance.
